The USS Kittiwake is one of the most iconic and accessible wreck dives in the Caribbean. Resting just offshore of Seven Mile Beach, the Kittiwake offers a rare combination of shallow depth, excellent visibility, swim-through opportunities, and intact structure - making it suitable for new divers, returning divers, and advanced wreck explorers alike.

What makes the Kittiwake special is not just its history, but how it sits in the water: upright, wide open, and positioned in a way that welcomes calm, unhurried exploration. You are not squeezing into tight overheads. You are moving through large, light-filled spaces, guided by clear structure and constant exit awareness - ideal for divers who want a safe introduction to wreck diving.

A Brief History

The USS Kittiwake served as a Submarine Rescue Vessel (ASR-13) in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1994. After retirement, she was intentionally prepared as an artificial reef and sunk in Grand Cayman in 2011.

This preparation included:

  • Removal of entanglement hazards

  • Cutting wide swim-through passages

  • Preserving machinery and structure

  • Ensuring safe diver access points

The result is a wreck that feels authentic and adventurous, yet approachable and dive-friendly.

Depth & Conditions

Feature

Detail

Depth Range

~35 ft (11 m) to ~65 ft (20 m)

Ideal for

Certified divers (Open Water and up)

Visibility

60–100+ ft, year-round

Water Temp

78–84°F (25–29°C), depending on season

Current

Typically mild to moderate

Because the wreck sits shallow, there is plenty of natural light inside, making orientation easier and the atmosphere more relaxed.

The Dive Experience: What You’ll See

The Kittiwake is inspiring not because it is mysterious or dark - but because it is clear, open, and full of life and detail. You can explore:

  • The pilot house

  • The engine room

  • The decompression chamber

  • The mess hall and corridors

  • The propellers and stern structure

  • Open swim-through bays with direct exit views

Inside, shafts of sunlight move through open doorways, lighting rooms softly. Outside, the hull is now home to schools of fish, coral growth, sponges, barracuda, rays, and occasionally turtles passing overhead.

This is not a wreck where divers feel pressed or enclosed - you always know where the exit is.

Safety & Swim-Through Awareness

Even though the Kittiwake is wreck-prepared and shallow, good wreck diving habits matter:

Skill / Habit

Why It Matters Here

Slow movement

Preserves visibility and reduces silt disturbance

Light awareness

Helps maintain orientation, especially in hallways

Calm breathing

Enhances buoyancy control and reduces task loading

Team spacing

Ensures everyone has room to move comfortably

Non-touch approach

Protects wreck stability and marine growth

The Kittiwake is safe to enjoy at your pace - nothing is rushed.

Environmental Respect & Wreck Awareness

Artificial reef projects like the Kittiwake work only when divers:

  • Do not break coral growth

  • Do not touch or move artifacts

  • Maintain good buoyancy in corridors

  • Leave the environment as they found it

Our approach is simple: Observe with care. Move with intention. Leave no trace.

The Kittiwake is a signature Cayman dive because it combines:

  • History

  • Structure

  • Light

  • Life

  • Safe exploration

  • Emotional presence

It is a dive where you feel part of something - a story layered into steel, ocean, and time.

This is not just a dive site. It is a place where many divers fall deeper in love with the underwater world.
