Into the Abyss: Blackwater Dive and the Ghosts of Cobalt Coast & Lighthouse Point

Welcome to July in Grand Cayman! As the waters warm up, the diving action heats up too. This month at Divetech, we are stepping away from the bright colors of the daytime reef and diving deep into the dark.


While Lighthouse Point and Cobalt Coast are famous for world-class shore diving by day, at night, they become the stage for one of the ocean's most spectacular and mysterious events: The Vertical Migration.


If you are looking to truly elevate your underwater skills and see creatures that look straight out of a sci-fi movie, it’s time to try a Blackwater Dive right from our shores.

Meet the Predatory Ghost: The Chaetognatha (Arrowworm)

One of the most common, yet visually stunning, subjects we encounter during these dives are the Chaetognatha, commonly known as arrowworms.


In fact, you won't need to look far for them. Because arrowworms are fierce hunters drawn to smaller plankton that are themselves attracted to light, you will often find the arrowworm swimming closest to your torch light, lit perfectly by the center beam.


These transparent torpedoes are a blackwater photographer's dream. When caught in your lights, they glow with an ethereal, ghostly luminescence. Don't let their delicate appearance fool you; they are fierce ambush predators. Despite being clear, they possess intricate internal structures, seminal vesicles, and tiny fins that create beautiful lines and highlights for macro photography.

This macro shot focuses on the head of the arrowworm. When not feeding, they look smooth, but this image reveals their secret weapon: formidable chitinous grasping hooks or "jaws" surrounding the mouth. They look positively prehistoric—or alien—up close.

This shot highlights the structure that gives them their speed. You can see the almost faint detail of the broad, vertical caudal (tail) fin and the smaller lateral fins. The intricate internal muscular structure is visible, showing how this clear animal generates powerful, darting speed to ambush prey.

Punching Above Its Weight (Squid in Stomach)

Arrowworms are voracious eaters. In this spectacular image, you can see right through the transparent body wall of the arrowworm, revealing a tiny squid sitting in its stomach. This demonstrates just how effective these predators are; they aren't just eating microscopic larvae; they are actively targeting other highly mobile predators like juvenile cephalopods.

The Plankton Wars (Magelona nectochaete in Stomach)

This photo shows an arrowworm that has just ingested a Magelona nectochaete. This is the larval stage of a spionid polychaete (bristle worm), which is recognizable by its long, complex sensory tentacles. Because both the hunter (the arrowworm) and the hunted (the larval worm) are largely transparent, the image captures a complex, layered "macro world inside a macro world."


What is Blackwater, Cayman Style?

When people hear "blackwater," they often think of drifting over thousands of feet of water in the open ocean. While that is one method, we love the unique accessibility of our blackwater shore dives at Cobalt Coast and Lighthouse Point.


You don't need to be miles offshore. At night, the reef itself "wakes up" as a massive migration of life emerges from the cracks and crevices of the structure. Countless marine worms and other zooplankton that remain hidden during the day rise up to feed in the water column. They form a thick, living swarm near the coast, and the predators—like the fascinating Chaetognatha—quickly follow to join the feast.


Reimagining the Dive Skillset

If you have never done a blackwater dive, get ready for a completely different kind of challenge.


Shallow is the Sweet Spot: Forget diving to 100 feet to find weird creatures. During this nightly emergence, most of the life is seen at shallow depths of 20 feet or less. This is where the prey concentrates, and the hunters follow.


The Art of the Hover: A blackwater dive is not about covering distance. We don't "swim" a route; we master buoyancy. Success means maintaining perfect midwater buoyancy control in pitch darkness, with no references but your torch beam and maybe a reference line.


Slow Down and Scan: The movement is slow and deliberate. You are essentially hovering in space, using the tight beam of your torch to slice through the darkness, looking for the glint of life.
