If you're planning your first scuba diving trip to the Cayman Islands - welcome! You're about to explore some of the clearest, warmest, and most marine-rich waters in the Caribbean. Whether you're joining us for a Discover Scuba experience or your Open Water certification, it’s normal to have lots of questions.
At DiveTech, we believe there’s no such thing as a silly scuba question. This guide rounds up the most frequently asked questions we hear from new divers visiting Grand Cayman - and gives you clear, professional answers straight from our instructors.
1. Do I need to know how to swim to try scuba diving?
You don’t have to be a competitive swimmer - but you do need to be comfortable in the water.
For a Discover Scuba Dive:
You’ll need to float or tread water for a short time
You'll practice underwater breathing and basic buoyancy
No lap swimming required!
For Open Water Certification:
You must swim 200 meters (any style, no time limit) and
Float for 10 minutes without gear
Our instructors guide you every step of the way - no pressure, just support.
2. Is it safe for beginners to dive in the Cayman Islands?
Absolutely. Grand Cayman is one of the safest and most beginner-friendly dive destinations in the world.
Here’s why:
Calm, warm waters (82–85°F / 28–29°C)
High visibility (80–100 feet on most days)
Gentle sloping reefs and shallow walls
Certified dive professionals with a strong safety culture
Plus, DiveTech uses top-quality equipment, small group ratios, and thorough pre-dive briefings so you always feel informed and secure.
3. How deep do beginner divers go?
For a Discover Scuba experience:
Max depth: 40 feet (12 meters)
Most dives are 25–30 feet, which is where much of the reef life lives
For Open Water certification:
After training, you’ll be certified to dive up to 60 feet (18 meters)
Don’t worry - we go slowly, and only as deep as you're comfortable.
4. What will I see underwater?
Expect a vibrant underwater ecosystem, including:
Tropical fish (parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish)
Moray eels and sea turtles
Colorful coral formations and sponge walls
Occasionally, stingrays, eagle rays, or reef sharks!
Our local dive sites offer something for everyone - whether you're a photographer, explorer, or just here for the magic.
5. Can I dive if I wear glasses or contact lenses?
Yes!
If you wear contacts, you can dive with them on - just don’t open your eyes underwater without your mask.
We’ll make sure you can see clearly and enjoy every moment.
6. Can kids try scuba diving?
Yes - with age-appropriate programs!
Ages 8–9: Bubble Maker and Seal Team (pool-based, shallow water)
Ages 10–14: Discover Scuba or Junior Open Water Certification
Ages 15+: Full Open Water Certification
We use kid-sized gear and have instructors trained to work with young divers safely and patiently.
7. What should I bring with me to DiveTech?
We provide all scuba equipment, so you just need:
Swimsuit
Towel
Reef-safe sunscreen
Water bottle
Dive log (if certified)
You’re welcome to bring your own mask/snorkel or GoPro - but we have gear rentals and photo/video services too!
8. How long is a typical scuba experience?
Discover Scuba: ~2.5 to 3 hours (briefing + practice + ocean dive)
Open Water Certification: 2 days total (spread over multiple sessions)
We offer flexible scheduling to fit your travel plans. Just let us know your arrival/departure dates and we’ll make it work.
9. Is scuba diving physically demanding?
Not particularly, but you should be in general good health. You'll be moving slowly, floating most of the time, and breathing calmly.
We’ll ask you to complete a medical questionnaire. If you have conditions like asthma, heart problems, or recent surgery, you may need a doctor’s clearance.
10. I’m nervous - what if I panic underwater?
This is a common concern - and our instructors are trained to help.
Here’s what we do:
Practice basic skills in shallow water first
Go at your pace - no rushing or pushing
Stay by your side the entire time
Teach relaxation and breathing techniques
You’ll never be alone, and we’re happy to take as long as you need. Many nervous divers become our most confident!
11. Can I fly after scuba diving?
Great question - and an important one.
You should wait:
12–18 hours after a single dive
18–24 hours after multiple dives or deeper dives
Plan your dives earlier in your trip so you’re clear to fly home safely.
12. How do I book my first dive at DiveTech?
Easy! Just:
Decide if you want Discover Scuba or Open Water Certification
Share your travel dates
Let us know your age, swim comfort level, and health conditions
We’ll take care of the rest - including gear, scheduling, and guidance
