Introducing your child to the underwater world can be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences as a parent. At DiveTech in Grand Cayman, we specialize in youth scuba diving programs designed for fun, safety, and skill-building — no matter your child’s age or comfort level.

From their first bubbles in a pool to earning their first international scuba certification, our youth diving experiences are taught by PADI and SSI-certified instructors who know how to keep things exciting and safe.

In this guide, we’ll break down the three main programs we offer for young divers: Bubble Maker, Seal Team, and Junior Open Water Certification — along with tips for parents to decide what’s best.

Why Start Diving Young?

Scuba diving teaches more than just how to use gear. For kids, it can develop:

  • Confidence & independence

  • Awareness of the ocean and conservation

  • Problem-solving & motor coordination

  • Teamwork & communication

And let’s be honest — there’s nothing cooler than telling friends you’ve been scuba diving in the Caribbean!

Bubble Maker (Ages 8+)

The Bubble Maker program is where it all starts. It’s a gentle, fun-first introduction to scuba in a safe and controlled environment.

What It Includes:

  • 30-minute orientation and safety briefing

  • Use of real scuba gear (scaled for kids)

  • Dive in a pool or shallow lagoon up to 6 feet (2m)

  • Games, bubbles, and lots of smiling faces

  • Small instructor ratio for maximum supervision

Goals:

  • Help kids breathe underwater for the first time

  • Get comfortable with mask, regulator, and fins

  • Have fun exploring and playing in a safe area

Perfect for kids who love the water and are curious about scuba — without pressure or performance requirements.

Seal Team (Ages 8–10)

Seal Team is an ongoing scuba skills development program for kids who want to go beyond Bubble Maker.

It combines pool dives, missions, and basic scuba skills in a fun “team” format.

What It Includes:

  • Multiple Aqua Missions (like underwater games and challenges)

  • Learning real skills like mask clearing, buoyancy, and finning

  • Mission themes: Navigation, Environment, Safety

Why Kids Love It:

  • It feels like a real adventure

  • They get to complete missions

  • Great confidence-builder for future certifications

Seal Team is usually completed over 1 session, and kids often team up with siblings or new friends.

Junior Open Water Diver (Ages 10–14)

For the motivated and adventurous child, this is the first full scuba certification course — and it’s internationally recognized.

What It Covers:

  • 5 academic modules (online)

  • Pool/confined water training sessions

  • 4 open water dives (up to 40 feet / 12 meters for ages 10–11)

  • Dive planning, safety procedures, gear assembly

Upon successful completion, kids receive a Junior Open Water Certification, which allows them to dive:

  • With a certified adult

  • Up to 12m/40ft (ages 10–11)

  • Up to 18m/60ft (ages 12–14)

At age 15, they can upgrade to the full Open Water Diver status.

Why Parents Love It:

  • Structured learning with professional supervision

  • Teaches responsibility, safety, and independence

  • Sets the stage for a lifetime of ocean exploration

Our Instructors = Your Safety Net

Every DiveTech youth program is run by instructors who are:

  • PADI/SSI Youth-Certified

  • Trained in child safety

  • First Aid/CPR certified

  • Experts at keeping things fun, flexible, and pressure-free

We don’t push. If your child wants to stop mid-session — we stop. Every step is built around confidence, trust, and safety.

What Parents Should Know

Before enrolling your child, keep these in mind:

  • Kids should be comfortable in the water, but don’t need to be strong swimmers

  • Ear equalization may need practice — we teach it gently

  • Patience is key: every child moves at their own pace

  • A short wetsuit is recommended (we provide them)

Also, we recommend not diving on the last day of your trip due to flying safety rules (wait 18–24 hours after diving before flying).

Youth Gear: Kid-Sized Everything

At DiveTech, we stock child-specific scuba gear, including:

  • XXS BCDs and wetsuits

  • Junior masks and snorkels

  • Lightweight tanks

  • Small fins and adjustable weights

Everything is cleaned, inspected, and tested before each session.

What Kids (and Parents) Are Saying

The kids absolutely loved the experience and all my son now talks about (and he talks a lot) is scuba diving! Thanks so much to all at Divetech for making us all feel very welcome.” — David Lamble

Our boys had their junior open water .... appeared very thorough and professional...made us feel welcome and safe.” — Ruth Anderson

Booking a Youth Program

  1. Choose the right program (Bubble Maker, Seal Team, or Junior OW)

  2. Send us your child’s age and water experience

  3. Pick your dates (we recommend 2–3 weeks minimum for Junior OW)

  4. Let us know if you’d like to dive together as a family

We handle everything else — gear, smiles, and certifications.

Final Thoughts

There’s nothing like seeing your child light up as they breathe underwater for the first time. Whether it’s a one-hour pool session or a full junior certification, DiveTech’s youth dive programs are about more than diving — they’re about building confidence, curiosity, and lifelong memories.

We’d love to introduce your family to the world beneath the surface — safely, joyfully, and one bubble at a time.
